Team WET Schools arrives in San Antonio! Thanks
to the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region
VI and the San
Antonio Water System (SAWS), San Antonio has launched
its Team WET Schools program. The new partnership with SAWS
has many benefits: Team WET Schools are eligible to participate
in SAWS' mini-grant program to support their water stewardship
efforts. SAW is currently developing "Urban Water"
a middle school curriculum module to provide teachers an additional
water education resource. As the city's main water provider
(SAWS supplies 95% of San Antonio's water), SAWS offers the
inside scoop on San Antonio water issues and the expertise to
make this information applicable to teachers. San Antonio Middle
Schools receive a top of the line, water education experience
when they become a Team WET School. |

Irving
Middle School recognized a great opportunity and seized it
to become the first nationally recognized Team WET School
in San Antonio.
An enthusiastic
gathering of Irving Middle School teachers explored water
activities and water issues at a WET in the City training
workshop. Teachers from a variety of disciplines including
Science, Math, U.S. History, Teen Leadership and Special Education
united for the interactive 6 hour training. The staff's diversity
is an ideal match for the interdisciplinary curriculum.
The initial training session inspired teachers to share their
new water findings with eager students.
Cheers and singing resonated through the Irving auditorium
on November 13 to kick off the Team WET Schools Dedication
Ceremony. Students engaged in a friendly competition of WETTEST
LINK, audience participants won t-shirts donated by SAWS.
Water conservation skits highlighted home water conservation
tips. The ceremony incorporated all disciplines as students
took center stage to read water-themed poetry they had written
to convey their perceptions and experiences with water. The
ceremony culminated with a Team WET School certificate being
presented to Irving Middle School to make it all official.
All in all Principal Cadena, Team WET Coordinator, staff,
and students worked hand-in-hand to create an entertaining
and informative celebration.
As part of this exciting Team WET Schools partnership, teachers
continue to lead WET in the City activities, and students
embark on a project to install an 125 gallon aquarium in their
school as their water stewardship project.
