CEE Programs

CEE, through its Team WET Schools program partners with your school to provide professional development and support for teachers to carry out water education and guide students in the completion of a water stewardship project. Dedication ceremonies kick off new Team WET Schools and encourage teachers, school administration, students and communities to unite in the new initiative. With Team WET School designation ceremonies, principals can encourage partnerships among WET in the City community sponsors who support innovative projects that encourage student involvement, citizenship and academic excellence. As part of a national water education network, Team WET Schools receive national, state, and local visibility while receiving continuing support from the Council for Environmental Education and its local partner.

Team WET Schools encourages teacher collaboration. Beginning with a WET in the City in-service day, teachers learn how to implement the WET in the City curriculum in the classroom. In a six-hour workshop teachers become acquainted with water issues in their community and learn how to address those issues while creating fun and enriching learning experiences for their students. Upon completion of the workshop, each teacher is given the WET in the City K-12 Curriculum and Activity Guide to guide them in conducting innovative interdisciplinary water education activities in their classrooms. Teachers participating in the Team WET School program receive ongoing technical support and professional development opportunities. At participating schools, one teacher per school building is asked to be the Team WET Schools Coordinator. Team WET Schools Coordinators are provided with additional professional development opportunities, receive recognition, and become part of a team to help guide the direction and content of Team WET School offerings nationwide. Team WET Schools Coordinators and participating Team WET Schools teachers play an integral role in promoting, implementing, and evaluating the program.

H2Olympics, Who Wants to be a Water Champion? School Site Aquatic Areas, Team WET Water Festivals, Water Watchers school-wide water audits, "Leadbusters" school plays. These are just a few of the student-driven water investigations and stewardship projects that beckon “student involvement” across the disciplines. School events like the Team WET Water Festival and service learning projects impact the community and provide great stories for local broadcast and print media. At Team WET Schools, school gymnasiums host water festivals, schoolyards come alive with aquatic areas for hands-on science lessons, water meters become exercises in math, and WET in the City water test kits make chemistry come to life. Kids connect classroom learning to on-the-ground projects that make a difference. Lessons flow from the head to the hand…across the school campus and ultimately, into the community.

The WET in the City K-12 Curriculum and Activity Guide is the core content material provided to teachers in the WET in the City training workshop, but there is more! To help schools initiate the “student involvement” piece of the program, where WET in the City lessons come alive, a Team WET Schools Kit is provided to each school to provide helpful suggestions and materials for student projects, and recognition for being part of a Team WET School. Included in the kit are “how to” guides for hosting Team WET Water Festivals and a Water Watchers: Conserving Water at your School and Home guide that describes water audit projects. A copy of the recently produced WET in the City Spanish Language Student Pages is provided to assist teachers in addressing spanish speaking populations in urban school. Also included in the kit is a Team WET water test kit to initiate water quality activities at your school and much more!

A Team WET Schools Activity Resource trunk is being piloted in select schools to supplement the Activity Resource Kit. The trunk includes laminated activity cards, transparencies, and other supplies necessary to complete any given activity in the WET in the City Activity and Curriculum Guide. Activities are easy to implement with the activity resource trunk on hand. Teachers will find themselves equipped to be water education leaders.
